What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment (RCT), often referred to simply as root canal, is the specialist removal of dying or dead dental pulp from an affected tooth by an endodontist, followed by root canal cleaning and filling.

This treatment is essential in preserving the tooth and preventing dental infection from spreading and causing more significant damage, such as tooth nerve damage, painful abscesses in the jawbone, tooth loss and even sepsis.

What causes dental pulp to become infected?

Within healthy natural teeth is soft tissue known as dental pulp, which contains nerve chambers and blood vessels that enable blood supply throughout the root canal, keeping the tooth alive and in excellent condition.

However, this tissue can sometimes become infected (pulpitis), putting the health of your teeth at risk. The early stages of pulpitis are reversible, but if it goes untreated, irreversible pulpitis will set in, which is severe inflammation of the pulp to the point where it won't recover.

Dental pulp can become infected for several reasons:

  • Tooth decay - Tooth decay creates holes in your teeth (cavities) that expose the pulp chamber to bacteria that cause the pulp tissue to die.
  • Broken, cracked or chipped teeth - Fractured teeth allow bacteria in the mouth to seep into the pulp chamber.
  • Dental trauma - Physical injury to the teeth or mouth can cause direct damage to the pulp tissue.

Symptoms of inflamed or infected pulp

  • Mild to severe tooth pain when applying pressure or chewing
  • Swelling and tenderness of the gums
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures

How does root canal treatment work?

If X-rays taken during your initial visit to our dental practice determine that you'll require a root canal procedure to save your tooth, you'll be booked in for treatment. The process from start to finish typically looks like this:

  1. Local anaesthetic is administered by our root canal experts to avoid any discomfort. If possible, the tooth will also be isolated using a rubber dam to keep the area dry and clear.
  2. A small hole is made by your dentist through the tooth into the nerve chamber to locate and measure the root canals, which are then widened using fine instruments. A microscope will be used with all specialist root canal treatments to boost magnification for greater precision.
  3. The infected pulp is removed, and the root canal area is cleaned and disinfected.
  4. Once clean, the canals are filled with a root canal filling to seal them off and prevent re-infection. In most cases, infections will start to heal at this point.
  5. If previously agreed upon, your dental specialist will place a crown over the treated tooth to protect it and enhance its appearance.

To make the process as comfortable as possible for our patients, a local anaesthetic is administered during root canal treatment to numb the area around the affected tooth and reduce pain. Most patients only experience mild discomfort following treatment, but it's common to experience none at all. If any pain is experienced afterwards, it can be eased with over-the-counter pain relief.

The process of removing the bacteria or dying tissue from inside the tooth and cleaning and disinfecting the root canals usually takes between 90 minutes to 2 hours over one or two visits to The Mayhill Dental and Specialist Centre, depending on the severity of the case.

For more information, give us a call today on 01600 712020 or message us online, and we'll be in touch as soon as possible.

Costs for specialist root canal therapy in South Wales start from £750 per tooth on average. Your dentist at The Mayhill will be able to give you a more accurate estimate after they've assessed your teeth during your initial consultation.

To book an appointment, please don't hesitate to call our friendly team on 01600 712020 and they'll find a time that fits around you.

I love being a client of Mayhill Dental practice. After years of feeling dread for dental appointments at another practice I now no longer feel this attending Mayhill. Everyone is so friendly, attentive and supportive. I cannot fault the practice or the people I have encountered.

All at Mayhill go that extra mile to provide top class dental care. Yesterday Tracy McNulty was as superb as always, providing top class treatment in a highly professional manner and setting while being hugely personable. The nurse assisting was clearly skilled and knowledgeable and the two formed a great team.

The time given to explain how my treatment will proceed. The experience shown from all who I have been in contact with. Having received some my bad dental treatment elsewhere I trust this team completely having tracked down my old dentist who now works here. I only saw him once but have seen others who are planning and treating me to rectify the damage and the best way forward. Very happy with the plan.
