The benefits of visiting a dental hygienist in Monmouth

Professional cleaning and tartar removal

Plaque is a sticky bacterial coating that forms on your teeth - if it isn't brushed or flossed away properly, including in difficult-to-reach areas like between the teeth, the plaque hardens to form tartar deposits which cannot be removed easily at home.

Persistent plaque and calculus can lead to periodontal disease, causing bleeding gums, tooth mobility and eventually tooth loss.

Your dental hygienist will perform a professional and intensive clean on all accessible surfaces of the teeth to ensure any plaque and tartar build-up is fully removed. If you have a lot of tooth decay, they may also apply a fluoride gel to help protect the teeth from further attack.

Stain removal

Drinking tea, coffee, red wine or fizzy drinks will gradually stain your teeth over time. Your hygienist will be able to clean these stains away for a whiter smile.

Our hygienists use the innovative EMS system which utilises Guided Biofilm Therapy to clean your teeth effectively, which uses air, sodium bicarbonate and water together to remove stains.

Fresh breath

A cleaner mouth free from bacteria and decay means fresher breath! So, you can talk and socialise at ease without feeling self-conscious about your breath.

Prevention of gum disease

Excellent dental hygiene ensures healthy gums and reduces your chances of gum disease, which, if left untreated, can lead to the loss of teeth. Early signs of gum disease include bleeding gums when brushing.

Your hygienist will test for this, and if any signs of gum disease are found, they may apply an anti-bacterial gel under the gum line to kill the bacteria that causes it.

With regular appointments, they will be able to treat it before it's had the chance to progress.

However, if you have advanced gum disease (periodontitis), we provide gum disease therapy to treat the condition and prevent damage to the surrounding bone.

Dental Hygienist South Wales

Oral hygiene plan

Our experienced dental team will work with your individual needs to create a tailor-made plan for optimum maintenance of your oral hygiene.

This includes recommending the right products, explaining the different types of brushes and showing you the most effective ways to clean your teeth and gums.

Dietary advice and smoking cessation

The foods we eat can affect the condition of our teeth, whether it be through staining or acid erosion. If your diet is causing dental problems, our hygienists can advise on changing your eating habits to prevent further harm.

Your dental hygienist can also offer smoking cessation guidance if required, as smoking is a big factor in causing periodontal disease, staining, bone loss, oral cancer and preventing healing after dental work.

How often should I visit my dental hygienist in South Wales?

We recommend having regular hygiene treatments every six months alongside your routine dental health reviews. This will help to ensure that any developing issues are found and treated before they become detrimental to your oral hygiene.

We recommend all The Mayhill Dental and Specialist Centre patients have
regular hygiene treatments at least once to twice a year
alongside your routine dental health reviews

I should like to thank Jason and team at Mayhill for their care in dealing with a troublesome tooth (new crown now fitted) and polyfilling a chip lost from a front tooth recently. Thrilled. Can now eat both sides of my mouth. Jason has been aware of my difficulties with trigeminal neuralgia and has tried to mitigate any return of symptoms by taking care when touching my face.
