Nervous Patients and Sedation at The Mayhill
Nervous patients can often experience a paralysing fear of coming to the dentist. Here at the Mayhill, we try to break down these fears and put our patients at ease. We are totally focused on individual patient needs. We take time to get to know our patients and help them overcome any anxieties. In our experience, the following factors can help patients overcome nerves.
We explain and clarify all procedures and treatments. Usually it is a lack of knowledge that can create fear of the unknown. Patients are involved every step of the way with their treatment plan which is often taken at a gentle pace.
We always establish a signalling system in our treatment room allowing us to stop at any moment should the patient have any discomfort or simply need a break.
We encourage our patients to express themselves honestly which gives us a chance to understand their concerns. With modern techniques we can genuinely say that our patients experience very little discomfort.
The anxiety of most procedures can be reduced by giving the patient an oral dose of valium one hour prior to treatment. This reduces anxiety and helps the patient build confidence as they are still aware of what is going on. Many patients find that they no longer need this kind of sedation as their confidence builds.
There are some treatments that are a little more invasive and challenging and in these circumstances patients who are nervous prefer a higher level of sedation. Intravenous sedation can totally remove fear and anxiety in these people. Patients are often unaware that anything has been done. This makes it possible for us to treat virtually any anxious or phobic patient. This treatment is carried out by dentists who have the highest standards of training in a very safe environment.
